How to use the calculator

  1. Measure the Brix value of the milk you have – whole milk, waste milk or an existing mix – with a refractometer.
  2. Enter the reading, the starting amount and your dry matter target. The calculator instantly shows how many kilograms of milk powder to add.
  3. Need a specific final amount? Enter the desired final amount and both powder and water are calculated so the dry matter percentage hits your target.

What is a Brix reading?

A Brix reading is taken with a refractometer and indicates the concentration of dissolved solids in a liquid. It is the fastest and most reliable everyday method for checking the strength of calf milk. For milk, a simple rule of thumb applies: the dry matter percentage is roughly the Brix value plus 2. If you measure 11 Brix, the milk contains around 13% dry matter – the same as standard whole milk.

Why does the dry matter percentage matter?

The dry matter content determines how much energy and nutrition the calf gets per litre. A target of 13% dry matter corresponds to whole milk, while a higher content gives the calf extra energy – for example in cold periods or for high growth rates. Mixes of 15% dry matter or more should not be used without prior advice from one of our experts, as overly strong mixes can cause digestive problems.

With Sprayfo milk powder you can adjust the dry matter percentage precisely and consistently from day to day – and this calculator does the maths for you.

Use the calculator as an app

The calculator is built as a Progressive Web App (PWA). Open the page on your phone, choose "Add to Home Screen", and it sits there like a regular app that launches instantly and works offline – even where barn connectivity fails.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Brix reading?

A Brix reading is taken with a refractometer and indicates the concentration of dissolved solids in the milk. For calf milk, the dry matter percentage is roughly the Brix value plus 2.

How much dry matter should calf milk contain?

A target of 13% dry matter corresponds to standard whole milk. A higher dry matter content gives the calf extra energy. Mixes of 15% dry matter or more should only be used after consulting an expert.

How do I calculate the amount of milk powder?

Measure the Brix value of your milk, enter it together with the starting amount in litres and your dry matter target. The calculator shows how many kilograms of Sprayfo milk powder and litres of water to add.

Does the calculator work without an internet connection?

Yes. Add the calculator to your phone's home screen and it works like a regular app – even offline in the barn.
